THE OVERVIEW
Start with the Old Town in short sections, then use the New Town, Stockbridge and Leith to change the rhythm. Three or four nights gives room for the castle ridge, one major museum, a gallery, a waterfront meal and a quieter riverside or neighbourhood walk. May, June and September are useful for culture and daylight. August is the festival peak and changes prices, crowds and movement.
